What is Makaton Friendly?

Attaining our Silver Makaton Friendly accreditation in 2022 enabled us as a school to better serve Makaton users and improve outcomes for all the children in the school. It also helps us in our aim to be as inclusive a school as possible, ensuring equality and equity for all learners. 

With financial support from the Integrated Education Fund we have been able to train all our permanent classroom staff to Makaton Level Two and the Makaton Lead, Miss Algie, is trained to Level Three. We use Makaton daily to support communication in the classroom and the children love learning the signs and using them in songs, rhymes and to support their verbal communication. 

Makaton Friendly is a partnership program designed to make organisations and community spaces more accessible to Makaton users. At Bangor Integrated Nursery School we are passionate about communication and firmly believe that all children and adults with learning or communication difficulties should enjoy equal access to our facilities and services.  A useful website for learning Makaton can be found here
